The Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital

NIH-Funded Postdoctoral Scientist -- Kerlin Laboratory

An NIH-funded postdoctoral position is available in the Kerlin Research Laboratory within the Center for Clinical and Translational Research of the Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Individuals with experience in coagulation biology and signaling, kidney disease pathogenesis, or expertise in molecular and cellular biology who are interested in working with an interdisciplinary group to drive discovery of the mechanisms by which coagulation signaling drives chronic kidney disease progression are encouraged to apply. The work will center on the use of transgenic mouse models of kidney disease and coagulation signaling complemented by work in genetically manipulated cell culture models.

Recent discoveries from the Kerlin Laboratory strongly suggest that thrombin generated within the glomerulus drives progression of chronic kidney disease toward end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). ESKD is a leading cause of death and ESKD-related mortality is predominantly due to cardiovascular morbidity (e.g. myocardial infarction and stroke). Thus, the long-term goal of our research is to reveal key mechanistic interactions between the coagulation and kidney systems and identify novel molecular targets with potential to slow or halt kidney disease progression.

The Abigail Wexner Research Institute is ranked sixth nationally in NIH-funding to free-standing children’s hospitals. Research programs are organized into 14 multidisciplinary Centers of Emphasis structured to encourage collaboration, facilitate team science, and foster creativity. Affiliation with The Ohio State University, a major public research university, enables collaboration across a multitude of scientific disciplines. Ohio’s state capital, Columbus (and its surrounding metro area), is a thriving, diverse, technologically sophisticated city with a population of more than two million. Quality of life and cost of living is outstanding.
