HTRS Partners with Team Bonding, Inc. and Kids Matter, Inc. for Third Annual SEARCH Workshop
MILWAUKEE, Wis. — The Hemostasis & Thrombosis Research Society, Inc. (HTRS) partnered with Team Bonding, Inc. and Kids Matter, Inc. to add a community service element to its third annual HTRS SEARCH Workshop (“Students Exploring Academic Research Careers in Hematology”) from October 17-19 in Milwaukee. SEARCH is a 2.5-day educational program designed by HTRS to inspire young people interested in science and medicine to consider careers in research and/or the clinical care of patients with rare blood disorders.
As part of this year’s Workshop, SEARCH attendees worked with representatives from Team Bonding, Inc. to create and donate 24 teddy bears for Kids Matter, Inc., a Milwaukee-based nonprofit that advocates for abused and neglected children in foster care.
“HTRS is deeply committed to nurturing curiosity and compassion in the next generation of scientists and clinicians working in classical hematology,” said A. Valance Washington, PhD, Chair of the 2025 HTRS SEARCH Workshop Planning Committee. “Partnering with Kids Matter, Inc. allows us to extend the impact of our Workshop not only with students looking to develop fulfilling careers, but to foster children in Milwaukee who deserve safety, stability, and comfort.”
Kids Matter, Inc. operates under the belief that foster care should be temporary, not a way of life. Their Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteers are everyday citizens who work tirelessly to ensure that each child’s voice is heard in Milwaukee County Children’s Court. CASAs independently investigate cases of abused and neglected children and advocate for each child’s best interest, with the end goal of finding a loving, safe, and permanent home for all.
The HTRS SEARCH Workshop offers undergraduate, medical school, and graduate school students an opportunity to meet and be mentored by nationally known experts in classical hematology. The program reinforces the values of scientific advancement, caring for people with blood disorders, and service to others in the community.
Together, HTRS, Team Bonding, Inc., and Kids Matter Inc. are working to demonstrate that building new careers in science while caring for our community builds a stronger, better future for all.
