Research Fellowship Opportunity – Clinical Thrombosis Program
The Clinical Thrombosis Program at Hamilton Health Sciences and McMaster University is seeking applicants for the Dr Jack Hirsh Research Fellowship, a research fellow position based at the David Braley Cardiac Vascular and Stroke Research Institute. The fellowship is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2026.
The program is internationally recognized for its leadership in thrombosis research, including studies of immunothrombosis, antithrombotic therapies, and large-scale clinical trials. Fellows benefit from a highly collaborative training environment that integrates both clinical investigation and laboratory-based research.
This translational, bench-to-bedside fellowship will be jointly supervised by Patricia Liaw (Thrombosis and Atherosclerosis Research Institute, TaARI), Noel Chan (Population Health Research Institute, PHRI), and Jack Hirsh. The research program emphasizes the mechanisms of immunothrombosis, with particular focus on extracellular histones and their role in both acute and long-term venous and arterial thrombotic disease.
The successful fellow will take part in translational laboratory experiments as well as clinical thrombosis research. Responsibilities include critical data evaluation; preparation of study protocols and ethics submissions; coordination and execution of research studies; and meaningful contributions to data analysis, abstracts, and manuscript preparation. Active participation in research meetings, journal clubs, and educational sessions is expected.
This fellowship is ideally suited for physicians holding an MD (or equivalent) with background training in internal medicine, hematology, cardiology, or related specialties. Candidates with a strong PhD (or equivalent) background in thrombosis, vascular biology, or closely related research areas are also encouraged to apply.
This is a one-year position with the option to renew for a further year, conditional on successful completion of the first year. The stipend is $70,000 CAD per year.
Interested applicants should send a curriculum vitae, a brief statement of research interests, and contact details for referees to Dr Patricia Liaw ([email protected]), Dr Noel Chan ([email protected]) and Dr Jack Hirsh ([email protected]).
Application deadline: January 31, 2026
